Life Transition

I work with individuals who are navigating significant life transitions. This can include college students who are grappling with the stress of transitioning to college life after high school and all of the new challenges, individuals who are retiring from a long career, as a civilian or first responder, or survivors of an acquired brain injury or stroke, helping them to rebuild their lives and to move forward learning to live and accept the “new normal” of life.

For people who are adjusting to life after an acquired brain injury or stroke, the impact can be profound, leaving people not only with physical disabilities, but often with depression and all-consuming grief for the life they lost. Everything from family dynamics to daily routines can change, and many survivors must re-learn basic skills like walking and talking. Together, we will work to explore what this new life can look like and find ways to adapt to the changes that have occurred.

I often work with the caregiver in the family as well and assist them with strategies to assist them with maintaining their self care regimen. When one person in the family has a major health crisis or change, the workload does not change and often the caregiver can become overburdened and overwhelmed.

Similarly, for first responders who are transitioning into retirement, the change can be significant. Going from 100 miles per hour to zero can be a difficult adjustment, and many individuals struggle with finding a sense of purpose and meaning outside of their career. Through our counseling sessions, we can work together to create a plan for a smooth and gradual transition that allows you to discover new passions and enjoy life in a different way.

Ultimately, counseling can provide a range of benefits for people who are struggling with a variety of life transitions. Through counseling sessions my clients are able process the emotions associated with change, find new sources of meaning and purpose, create a plan for moving forward and find a new sense of hope and possibility.
